What the inspector finds
Every flagged character is shown with its code point, Unicode name, and an explanation of how it usually gets into text. Hidden characters and visible typography are reported separately — because they are different kinds of evidence.
Zero-width characters
Characters that render as nothing at all: zero-width spaces, joiners, and the byte-order mark.
Non-standard spaces
Space characters that look identical to a normal space but have different code points: no-break spaces, narrow no-break spaces, hair spaces, and friends.
Direction controls
Invisible characters that change text direction (left-to-right / right-to-left marks, embeddings, isolates).
Variation selectors
Invisible modifiers that select an alternate form of the preceding character. VS-16 makes the previous character render as emoji.
Unicode tags
A deprecated invisible character block (U+E0000–U+E007F) that can spell out hidden ASCII messages inside normal-looking text.
Other format characters
Soft hyphens, combining grapheme joiners, line/paragraph separators, and other invisible formatting code points.
Control characters
C0/C1 control codes other than tab and line breaks. They should never appear in prose.
Typographic signals (visible)visible
Perfectly normal typography: em/en dashes, curly quotes, ellipsis. Visible, standard, and used by careful human writers everywhere.
